Akoyikoyi School in Weno, Chuuk, Micronesia

About Akoyikoyi School:

SHIP-HOOPS supports Akoyikoyi School, a tuition school that serves 122 elementary, K-8, students from the northeast part of Weno, Chuuk, Micronesia where less than 25% of the households have an employed person. 93% of students come from households below the poverty line. 67% of students come from homes with food security.

Chuck State Schools rank the lowest performers in literacy and numeracy for the entire Pacific. Some of the many challenges in education that are being faced include the access to qualified teachers, the lack of student services (dental hygiene and special needs), the lack of essential learning materials (books, electronics, etc.). Akoyikoyi School is the only non-private school in Chuuk to accomplish academic excellence through the Xavier High School entrance exam.

SHIP-HOOPS is a non-profit dedicated to serving the children and youth of Chuuk State in the Federated State of Micronesia. SHIPS-HOOPS is a non-profit with (501 c3) status from the United States. Slowly, they are constructing an environmentally sensitive school through water catchments and solar power. This is becoming possible through grants, donations, and volunteers.

Statement received from Ms. Hannah:

Hello! I hope these words, although only words, can convey our gratitude: Jana and your team are doing something incredibly profound. Sometimes in this world, it is hard to see or find people who genuinely care, who will give without asking for return, and who put others before themselves. YOU are these people. We are deeply touched by your kindness, for even without knowing us, or our situation, you have decided to give. Kinisou chapur (thank you very much) from the bottom of our heart!
